About the Foodpreneur:
Brian has been in the food industry working in many different capacities for the past eighteen years. Most recently, Brian is a chef instructor at a culinary school in Birmingham, AL. Brian has always had a love of good, quality food. As an executive chef, Brian developed several recipes for sauces and glazes that were big hits to his customers.
Brian met his wife Caroline, and the two gave one of Brian's prized sauces to friends and family for Christmas gifts. The sauce was a blend of red and yellow bell peppers, Serrano peppers, and citrus perfect for an appetizer over cream cheese. Many began to call the sauce "Pepper Marmalade"- the name stuck! After giving marmalade as favors at their wedding, Caroline and Brian kept receiving more and more calls for the sweet, hot marmalade. And the story continues!
About the Not Yo' Mama's Biz:
Food is what brought Brian & Caroline together and what brings them to making gourmet food products! Their goal is to make quality products, free of preservatives and with a lively presentation, that people can enjoy with their family and friends. They are committed to bringing every customer happiness with every bite. That's why they say "Mama Never Made it THIS Good."
Founded:
September 2006
Current Clients:
Whole Foods, Home Goods, Specialty Food and Gourmet Stores Nationwide
Marketing Strategies:
Brian mostly relies on making connections with people who are influential in the food business. They participate in their local Birmingham market to create a local buzz and travel to food shows int the US to show off what peoples mama's can't make so good.
Brian new Not Yo' Mama's was a hit when:
People were fighting over the marmalade when given as wedding presents at Brian & Caroline's wedding. The marmalade gave the "catching of the bouquet" some serious competition!
Why is Brian in the food business?
Not only did it help Brian and Caroline get together, but he enjoys working together with other people in the food business. He enjoys sharing his passion of quality products with others that love food.
Words from the wise:
Although being in the food business is a wonderful and exciting venture, their are of course the downsides. Their is no more "normal life" with 9 to 5 hours and long vacation filled weekends. Many hours are spent on your feet at trade shows and markets that are generally on weekends. If you are up for the challenge, go for it!
Foodpreneur says:
Brian is on his way with winning the Best in Show for both "Best Condiment" and "Best Jam, Jelly, Preserve, & Honey" at the Americasmart Atlanta in 2007. The Not Yo' Mama's brand is also expanding soon by offering a bloody marry mix that will spice up your Sunday brunch and hopefully make you forget about your hangover. I would agree with Brian about the work involved when participating in Trade Shows. It is the hardest work you will ever do! The upside is you live and learn with each event and you have the opportunity to personally meet your customers. It adds value to the experience associated with the product. An expanding product line along with a dedication to making the brand a success will keep Brian on the right track and his "Mama" happy.
